The prevailing trade winds blow in from the northeast at 5-15 miles per hour about 300 days out of the year. Therefore, the northeast sides of all the islands are referred to as the Windward Side. On Oahu, everything west of the Koolau Range to the Waianae Coast could be considered Leeward Oahu. In common usage, Leeward Oahu consists of following major residential neighborhoods: Aiea, Foster Village, Mililani Town, Newtown, Pearl City, Royal Summit, Waikele, Wailuna and Waipio Gentry. In addition to these, there are numerous smaller neighborhoods.
These residential areas of the island have no close beaches and little in the way of tourist attractions. The major attraction is the close proximity to the Pearl Harbor/Hickam complex (Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, Hickam Air Force Base, various military commands such the Pacific Command, Fleet Marine Force Pacific, etc. and well as Honolulu International Airport). Most of the neighborhoods are also reasonable close to downtown Honolulu.
Homes exist in Leeward Oahu in all sizes, shapes and price ranges. In addition to single-family houses, there are numerous townhouse complexes and high-rise condominiums. In areas like Waikele and Mililani Town, many of the homes are either new or relatively new. Years ago, many of these areas were pineapple or sugar cane fields. Now, they have sprouted a new crop of residential homes and shopping centers. Waikele is a huge, favorite shopping area for the entire island with large brand-name stores and numerous discount outlets such as Saks 5th Avenue, Ann Klein, Levis, etc. Tourists, particularly those from Japan, are bussed daily from Waikiki to Waikele for shopping purposes.
