Lanikai (Royal or Heavenly Sea) is on the Windward Side of Oahu, next to Kailua. Lanikai Beach is often considered the finest swimming beach on Oahu; it also is noted for serving up some of the best sunrises. Lanikai is an exclusive residential area with no stores, several one-way streets and only single-family houses. Many of the homes were originally build years ago as vacation homes for owners that lived in Honolulu.
Lanikai Beach is one of the more scenic beaches with a half-mile of sparkling sand, palm trees that sway over a white beach, and lush tropical plants, The shore is protected by a nearby coral reef which keeps the surf relatively calm and the water a deep turquoise or green. Snorkeling is usually excellent as the limited wave activity supports the use of goggles or face masks. About a mile off shore are the twin, bird sanctuary islands commonly referred to as the "Mokes. The larger has a small beach and is a favorite for picnics.
Kailua Beach was selected as America's Best Beach" by coastal expert Dr. Stephen Leatherman (Dr. Beach) in the 1990's. Leatherman is a college professor from Florida who provides an annual ranking of the nation's best beaches. Once selected as the best beach, that beach is then retired from subsequent consideration.
House prices in Lanikai are well above average to very expensive, as this relatively small community is one of the preferred residential areas on Oahu with a prestige factor. There are a limited number of beachfront houses and none that are beachside. The beachside road is located one lot from the beach. Some of the beachfront houses are owned by various entertainment personalities; e.g., Michelle Pfeiffer. Most of the houses in Lanikai are a relative short walk from the beach. Those that are more distance are usually homes built into a hill that have a marvelous ocean view.
