The bedroom community of Kaneohe (Kane's Bamboo) is on the Windward Side of Oahu and lies along Kaneohe Bay, protected by Hawaii's only large barrier reef. Around the edge of the bay lie six of the original 30 fishponds that once graced this fine shore. Off shore is an island commonly called Coconut Island that earned fame as the opening shot in the TV show Gilligan's Island. Kaneohe Bay is a superb sailing area but some of it is polluted and it lacks good swimming beaches. A sandbar, approximately one mile wide and three miles long occupies the center of Kaneohe Bay making a perfect spot for picnics, etc.
The population of Kaneohe is in excess of 37,000. There is reasonably good shopping with two shopping centers and numerous smaller stores. Larger stores include both a Macy's and a Sears. Unlike Kailua with its marvelous beaches, Kaneohe is not a tourist area. Restaurants lean towards fast food with limited above average to good dining.
Single-family houses come in all sizes, shapes and price ranges and include a gated community where some of the lots are large enough for horses. There are a number of townhouse complexes, some with excellent water views including one waterfront with boat slips. The high-rises in Kaneohe, though, tend to be low quality and well below average in cost.
