With a population of approximately 37,000, Kailua (Two Seas) is one of the two major residential areas on Windward Oahu. It is largely thought of as a beach community; however, the area has an abundance of shopping, some of it tourist-oriented, along with numerous good to excellent restaurants. Kailua Beach is a crescent-shaped about two miles in length and 50 to 150 feet wide. The ocean bottom fronting the beach slopes gently to overhead depths without any coral heads. Light to medium waves support surfing by children along with boogey boards and body surfing by all. The off shore trade winds make is a superb area for windsurfing and kite boarding. At one end of the beach is Kailua Beach Park with picnic facilities, restrooms, showers, lifeguards and a boat ramp. The wave activity near the beach restricts visibility from a goggle or face mask, so snorkeling in-shore is limited.
Kailua Beach was selected as America's Best Beach" by coastal expert Dr. Stephen Leatherman (Dr. Beach) in the 1990's. Leatherman is a college professor from Florida who provides an annual ranking of the nation's best beaches. Once selected as the best beach, that beach is then retired from subsequent consideration. Many on Oahu consider Kailua Beach to be the best overall beach on Oahu in view of the wide variety of activities it supports.
Most of the homes in Kailua are single-family houses. There are several townhouse complexes, but only a couple of high rises. Prices vary widely. Overall, prices range from above average to expensive compared to the entire island. All six family members on The Stott Team live in Kailua.
